Fun with Composer Workshop Sessions 2010/2011 - August 15th, 2010 to May 1st, 2011

Session One:

Imagine-Explore - Create…Interactive Listening Lessons
Race to Rossini’s William Tell Overture and Hop to Saint-Saen’s Kangaroo

Explore an integration of literacy, drama, creative movement, storytelling, instrumental play and visual arts. Engaging, interactive activities which will create meaningful interactive which will last a life time! Together we will race down the track with “Joe” and the gang and hop through the zoo visiting our many different animal friends - all while learning valuable musical concepts and skills! Great classics from the past combined with teaching strategies from the present guarantee success! Come prepared for action! Hand-outs available at session.

Session Two:

Mozart Madness
Storytelling*Drama*Song*Creative Movement*Instrumental Play*Visual Art!

Snobby Pears and Magical Chefs will be discovered in the music of one of history’s most celebrated composers – Mozart! Through the use of simple props, puppets and costumes teachers will discover how to create a Mozart unit which combines children’s literature with fun filled art activities, drama, storytelling, song and dance. Musical concepts are woven into lessons to keep the focus on imaginative fun! Handouts available at session.

Session Three:

Bugs, Chicks and More!

Finally… theme based listening lessons which will fit into your preschool curriculum! Hooray! Together we will crack out of our egg shells to Mussorgsky’s Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks. – the perfect music to celebrate spring, dance the Bug Polka to Strauss’s Pizzicato Polka – a fabulous way to finish off your study of bugs and beware ….you may be asked to walk the plank as we explore pirates who sailed the seas as the highlight of your Ocean theme! Classical music has never been so child-friendly and fascinating! Engaging, interactive lessons which promise to keep children of all ages captivated while developing a true appreciation for classical music. Handouts available at the session.

Session Four:

Interactive Listening Lessons Boys Love! (Pre K- Gr. 6)

Discover how to make listening lessons the highlight of your music curriculum! Take classical music from its sophisticated realm to one that is child-friendly and fascinating! Engaging, interactive lessons with very mean Ringmasters and Snarly Pirates will integrate drama, song, creative movement, instrumental play, dance and visual art! An exciting, new approach to music from our past!

Session Five:

Classical Music Children Love!
Storytelling*Drama*Song*Creative Movement*Instrumental Play*Art

Classical music is taken from its elusive realm to one that is child-centered and fascinating. Let the music of the great composers come to life through the power of storytelling, drama, creative movement, song and instrumental play!

Classroom and music teachers will discover how to create meaningful experiences with the great classics by nurturing the many different ways children learn. Fun with Composer materials creatively weave in musical concepts which correspond to national standards all while keeping the focus on imaginative fun. Together we will experience creating a marching band to Bizet’s March of the Toreadors and escape the terrible trolls in the infamous Hall of the Mountain King by Greig. Come prepared for action!

Session Six:

Sing, Dance and Play to Mozart’s Magical German Sleigh Ride!

This session is geared for students in upper elementary as together we rediscover the Magic of Mozart’s German Sleigh Ride with a focus on Orff instrumentation and movement in triple time! Students will find the music challenging yet be pleasantly surprised at how easily this sophisticated piece may be brought together using simple techniques and team effort. Perfect for gr. 5- 7 students!


Half or Full Day Workshops

Deborah provides half or full day conferences which incorporate an introduction to basic movement stimuli and Laban movement efforts, a wide range of interactive listening lessons as well as Orff based lessons which focus on instrumental play.

Deborah’s passion for children’s literature is evident as she integrates children’s books into every lesson inspiring children and teachers alike to explore the stories which go hand and hand with the great classics. Art specialist Liz Swenson has designed simple, art activities which are perfect for every lesson and every child. Music specialists will enjoy working together with classroom teachers on the art projects and other cross-curricular activities which have been designed to accompany the Fun with Composer Classical Music Curriculum.

Deborah is able to custom design workshops to meet the needs of each group. Her activities help groups connect and interact at a new social level and are perfect for “breaking the ice”!

Deborah has presented to a variety of groups and at many different prestigious conferences through-out North America including: AOSA, Music Educator, MENC, Orff, Preschool, Homeschooling, Montessori, Piano and Music for Young Children Conferences. She has enjoyed visiting many Orff Chapters and also provides full day workshops to Elementary Schools.
